9. Gabriele

“Keep going! Faster!” Philippe yelled as I floored it, running through stop signs and red lights, nearly slamming into several cars.

Helicopters circled overhead. Sirens blared. I had no idea whether they were after us or not. All the windows had been shattered. Blood leaked from the cuts on my wrist. But there was no time to worry about that.

I gripped the steering wheel as tight as I could and kept my foot pressed down on the pedal.

Monroe’s laughing, sadistic face flashed in my mind. He was behind this. He had set it up. Maybe he had no more use for us. We had killed D’Agostino and probably had put the match to the gasoline that was the simmering tensions between the families. It wouldn’t take long until a five-alarm blaze broke out. And that’s when he would swoop in and put out the flames.

What a cold, cynical, diabolical bastard!

When we finally got to the meet-up spot outside of the city center, I pulled into an abandoned parking lot.

The only sound in the car was our heavy breathing. Neither one of us said anything. We didn't even turn to look at each other.

Philippe cursed in French, then got out.

So many thoughts swirled in my mind. I didn't know what to say to him. But I knew that I couldn’t let him run away. If he did that, we would both be screwed. Monroe and his men would be arriving any minute now.

“Hey, come back! Where are you going?”

He didn’t answer me. Instead, he started walking in circles and talking to himself.

He was the professional. He’d be in this line of work for a decade. But from watching the way he was acting, you would have thought this was his first job.

I got out of the car and slowly approached him.

He turned and looked at me with wild eyes.

“It was a setup,” he said. “We're supposed to be dead right now.”

I nodded and looked off into the distance. He was right.

“But Monroe will deny it,” he said.

“Do you think there's any more missions or is this it?”

“Not sure. Since we survived the ambush, he might think of other ways to use us. One assassination might not be enough to kick off an entire war. But a few more would guarantee it.”

“You think Monroe is that desperate to see this happen?”

He nodded.

I couldn't disagree. There was no telling what other sick schemes Monroe was cooking up in his corrupted skull. A question began gnawing at me. I probably should have ignored it. But I couldn’t let it go.

“But if he wants to put the Antonelli family in charge, then why would he want to kill us?”

Philippe rubbed his temples.

“He might just want to put Michelle in charge. Probably thinks she'll be easy to control,” he answered with a snicker.

“Why would he think that?” I asked.

“Because he's a fucking idiot.”

“You think he wants her for himself?” I couldn’t help asking.

Philippe smirked. “No chance. She'd eat a guy like that alive.”

I wasn't sure how to respond to that.
